DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF ENDOMETRIAL CANCER PT 2 Jul,28,2020

Treatment Options

  • Surgery – Women who have endometrial cancer are recommended to remove their uterus (hysterectomy) as well as fallopian tubes and ovaries (salpingo-oophorectomy). A hysterectomy will not allow you to have any children in the future, and the removal of ovaries means that you are going to experience menopause. During the surgery, the adjoining areas of your uterus are also inspected, and if cancer is spread to the lymph nodes, they are also removed during the procedure. The best cancer doctors can help determine the extent and specificity of treatment.
  • Radiation Therapy – There are two types of radiation therapy for endometrial cancer: external radiation and internal radiation. In external radiation, a machine is used to direct radiation beams directly to the specific areas of your body, while in internal radiation, a tiny radiation-emitting device would be placed inside your vagina for some time.
  • Hormone Therapy – This therapy involves taking hormone-based medications to cure your endometrial cancer. This mode is usually recommended when cancer has spread to an advanced stage and is affecting other vital parts of your body. Hormone therapy is also of two types, one to increase the progesterone level in the body, and the other to lower down the levels of estrogens in the body. In the former, synthetic progestin is administered in your body, which helps to stop the growth of your endometrial cancer cells. In the latter, the malignant cells would not be able to grow due to the lack of estrogen hormone in the body, and the cancer cells would eventually die.
  • Chemotherapy – This treatment method uses different range of chemicals to kill the cancerous cells. One, two, or a different combination of drugs can be used here, depending upon the stage of your disease. Chemotherapy drugs can be taken orally or injected through veins (intravenous). This therapy is recommended for women who have an advanced stage of cancer.

Palliative Care

Supportive care or palliative care is specialized medical care for cancer patients who are going through intense pain in order to provide some relief from the pain. Palliative care specialists contact your family, doctor, and look after the recommended treatment procedure to make it as comfortable for the patient as possible. In this way, a patient will get an extra layer of support. This approach can also be used if you are going through some other aggressive medical treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.
