The Significance of Counseling and Psychiatric Services

Many low income clinics in the country provide counseling and psychiatric services to students. Some of the popular services offered by the clinics include individual therapy, group therapy, drug and alcohol counseling, psychiatric medication management, prevention programming, and consultation.

Counseling and psychiatric services support the emotional and psychological well-being of the students. This is done through consultation, crisis intervention and counseling programs with a high level of confidentiality. So, if you feel that you are in need of counseling, don’t be hesitant to book an appointment with a community health care provider.

Students who are interested in counseling services will be directed to a counselor for an initial individual screening during their first visit to the clinic. The counselor will then hold a session with the student to discuss his/her immediate concerns and other issues.

The counselor will also ask a number of questions to the students such as why they are seeking assistance, what are their goals for counseling, etc., in order to determine whether the student is in any kind of emotional stress or not. This will help the counselor to identify the problems of the student and to come up with an efficient follow-up service.

Most of the counselors usually advise students to take part in a short-term individual therapy, as it will help them to reduce stress and deal with other emotional issues. Usually, students seek the assistance of counselors for a variety of reasons such as relationship problems, eating disorders, depression, anxiety issues, sexual assault, adjustment to college, and much more.

The length of treatment and frequency of individual therapy sessions significantly vary for each student. Students who are under a severe amount of stress will be arranging for individual counseling at least once a week. On the other hand, students with minor emotional issues receive individual therapy once a month or so.

Community health care clinics may also conduct group sessions for students. These group sessions generally include wellness workshops, structured treatment groups, support groups, and process-oriented treatment groups. The sessions may change according to the needs and expressed interest of the students.

We highly advise students to work closely with their counselors and to share all their concerns and problems with them. This will help the counselors to come up with an efficient plan that ensures the emotional and psychological well-being of their clients.
