EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HYPOPARATHYROIDISM PT 1 Jul,28,2020

The condition in which the body of a person tends to produce higher amount of thyroid hormones is known as hyperthyroidism. On the other hand, if the production of thyroid hormone is less than normal, the condition is termed as hypothyroidism. Hypoparathyroidism is yet another condition and most of us confuse Hypoparathyroidism with these two health issues.

Actually, Hypoparathyroidism is a rare condition in which a person’s body tends to produce notably lower level of parathyroid hormones or PTH. Note that parathyroid hormones play a major role in regulating as well as maintaining the amount of calcium and phosphorous in our body. In fact, these two minerals are extremely significant for the proper body functioning.

The aftereffect of low production of parathyroid hormones in your body is an abnormally lower production of calcium minerals in your bones and an increased production of phosphorus mineral in the blood. Luckily, the health condition can be treated by consuming calcium and phosphorus supplements in order to normalize the levels of these minerals in the body. However, the time period of consumption of these supplements will depend on the severity of the condition.

The Symptoms

There are many symptoms and red flags indicating that a person is suffering from Hypoparathyroidism. Some of those important symptoms that you must look for are listed below.

  • Fatigue or weakness without any notable reasons.
  • Patchy hair loss.
  • Brittle nails.
  • Dry or coarse skin.
  • Anxiety or depression for unexplained things.
  • Breathing difficulties.

If you experience any of the above-mentioned symptoms, it is recommended to consult a doctor right away. Note that these symptoms can be the signals of some other underlying health issues as well.

The Cause

Hypoparathyroidism is caused by the defects in the parathyroid gland, which make it secrete abnormally lower level of hormones. There are actually four parathyroid glands situated behind the thyroid gland. Some of the potential factors that can cause Hypoparathyroidism are listed below.

Post-Surgical Hypoparathyroidism

This is one of the most common causes of Hypoparathyroidism. In most accident cases, the parathyroid gland might get damaged or will be removed during the surgery. Such surgeries are also conducted to treat neck or throat cancer and also for other diseases developed in the parathyroid gland.
